This reminds me of the time that I joined a new company. For background: I was 30 years a civil servant, in collar-and-tie environments, either public-facing or in the immediate support team for Very Senior People. So business attire is my default setting for workplace situations, even in IT.
Cut to about three months into the new job. My colleagues in the IT team are used to me, but the rest of the company mainly haven’t met me. We are having a charity dress-down day, but I don’t do that, especially as I’m off out straight from work and am especially well suited and booted.
A colleague comes round doing the collection for the dress-down day. I don’t want to appear churlish and it’s for a good cause, so I put my hand in my pocket and give him the same money as everyone else. He looks surprised. “You do know this is for the dress-down day?” he asked.
I drew myself up to my full height, and announced to the office, “I AM dressed down.”
